President's Message

January 2013

I hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas with family and friends. So here we go into 2013!  I guess we didn’t fall off the fiscal cliff and we have a one year extension of the Farm Bill.  I think those are good things but sometimes I wonder if a little disaster isn’t a good thing.

Among the unknowns for the months ahead in California is weather as this will be in fact another dry year.  There’s no way around it, California needs more water storage.  We had  a couple of good snow years then 2012 not so good, but we didn’t fall off the cliff because we were able to carry over some water from 2011 and we just squeaked by.  Right now our snow pack is a little above average which is a good thing but we have no carry over to speak of.  So what if the snowpack doesn’t keep up?  Currently statewide our reservoirs are near 100% of average but not 100% of capacity.  We need more water storage.

The Madera Water Bank should be up and running this season and this is great new!.  Madera Irrigation District has worked long and hard to get this accomplished and they are to be congratulated.  Happy New Year to everyone and let us all pray for more snow.

See Ya
