The Soil Conservationist (Resource Conservationist) position is locate in the State Conservationist office, assigned to a field office or area office in the assigned state, Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

The purpose of this position is to provide analysis and evaluation of problems and issues related to a variety of conservation situations and unusual conditions.

The position is open for applications from October 4, 2024, to October 10, 2024, offering a salary range of $72,758 to $113,366 per year, within the GS 11-12 pay grade. There is one vacancy available in Fresno, CA, and telework is eligible based on agency policy. This is a permanent, full-time role with occasional travel required and the potential for relocation expenses to be reimbursed. As a Science Communicator, this role will collaborate with staff across the organization to identify, gather, analyze, and present data from and related to our work in compelling and clear written, visual, and digital collateral. Reporting to the Chief Development Officer, this position will support the Development and Communications team and all our programs: Accelerating Restoration, Solutions in our Soil, Waste Not (dairies and water quality,) and Water for the Future. This position will also identify new storytelling opportunities to help the organization advance our mission. A passion for translating and communicating complex, science-based information, data, and concepts to various audiences, a keen interest in learning about our work, and an exceptional ability to present visual stories from data are key skills needed for success in this role.

Location: This position will ideally be based at our San Francisco office, but we are open to working from our Modesto or Sacramento offices. Our teams work in a hybrid work environment with an option to work remotely a few days a week. Periodic travel throughout the state will be required.

NRCS recently opened its Pathways Internship and Recent Graduates positions on USA Jobs.  We are working towards hiring thousands of new staff to help with the implementation of the Inflation Reduction Act. I hope you will take a few moments to help us spread the word about these job opportunities to help us meet our staffing goals.  The Pathways Internship vacancy closes Tuesday, February 20th, and the Recent Graduates vacancy closes Monday, February 26th.

The Pathways Internship positions are available to students from high school up to the graduate school level. The Recent Graduates positions are available to students who apply within two years of receiving a degree or certificate of completion. Those who successfully complete the Pathways Internship or Recent Graduates Program can be eligible for non-competitive conversion to permanent, fulltime positions.  

These programs provide a great opportunity for students and recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in natural resource management, and give NRCS the opportunity to see if they will be a good fit for our agency.
